Entrepreneurs and business partners Mario Di Nenna and Robert Spohn turned Manayunk’s long standing Old Eagle Tavern at 177 Markle Street into Taps & Bourbon on Terrace — a high-tech craft beer and bourbon emporium, which will open in January of 2020. Di Nenna and Spohn worked together on the interior design of the new space, which seats a total of 75 guests inside, with 25 seats at the bar and another 50 at tables in the back room. Additionally, sidewalk tables will seat up to 10 guests outside while a 20-seat rear patio will be introduced in the future.
In addition to a fresh new look inside and out, the taproom is one of the first licensees in the region to feature a high-tech, self-service tap system which provides customers with the ability to pour their own beer. The seriously efficient, cost-effective system not only allows customers to serve themselves, but also assists with managing over consumption.
The menu features smoked BBQ sandwiches, a variety of pizzas and affordable bar fare, as well as house-made “cheez wiz” for dunking, which Di Nenna and Spohn have dubbed a “burger bath.” Taps & Bourbon on Terrace features a handful of premium wines, but the primary focus is purveying high-end bourbons, craft beers, bourbon-based cocktails, and other top-shelf spirits. The business will open with more than 50 different bourbons, as well as a handful of rye whiskeys, gins, vodkas, tequila and mezcal, but the bourbon selection will soon increase to over 100.
